Students' posters should include text that shows how to work with negative numbers in 1 of 5 situations. Students can copy and paste one of these for a title of their poster:
1. Adding with different signs
2. Adding with the same sign
3. Subtracting with negative numbers
4. Multiplying with negative numbers
5. Dividing with negative numbers
Each poster should include a rule, algorithm, or visual explanation. I would like to see students use their own words to explain, but these statements can be used. Here are some examples:
- Adding
- Same sign: add, then keep the sign
- Different sign subtract, then use the sign of the larger number
- Take the absolute value of each number, subtract one number from the other, use the sign from the larger number
- Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting a positive
- Subtracting
- Change to addition of the opposite value then, follow the addition rules
- Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive
- Multiplying
- If the signs are different, the answer is negative
- If the signs are the same, the answer is positive
- Dividing
- If the signs are different, the answer is negative
- If the signs are the same, the answer is positive
Students will come up with their own number sentences and examples.
