Earth Science

SCIENCE - The search for answers to questions about nature
EARTH SCIENCE - When the questions are related to this planet and its neighbors

Scientists explore the Earth by AIR - atmosphere, WATER - hydrosphere, and LAND - lithosphere. Scientists also study the earth's interior. The beginning of the following video details a nice animation of the Earth's interior layers. It goes on to describe the processes of plate tectonics, which I will go into later in further detail.

Back to School. Time for science!

The 2011-12 school year brings me another year of substitute teaching. Portland Public Schools did hire some new teachers this year, one-third of the number hired last year which was less than the year before. I'll begin this school year subbing for 7th and 8th grade science on a 6 week assignment. I'm very happy about that!
Science is definitely my favorite subject to teach. It encompasses all that there is, all the questions that humans have ever asked, and every molecule that exists in the universe (or perhaps multiverse).

If a teacher asks, which I will, "Who is a scientist?", would you respond by listing careers like oceanographer, chemical engineer, paleontologist, geneticist, etc. ? You may say that anyone who asks a question about nature is a scientist. Both are right answers. There is a difference in varying degrees just like a writer is anyone who writes, some writers are professional while others are just learning their ABC's.

"The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking." - Albert Einstein
