5th Grade Math Slideshow

This is the first presentation for my 5th grade class in 2012. Pause the video if you need more time for the slides. This is the beginning of the unit which is going towards fractions. I think that fractions are the most important concept to retain from 5th grade math. Every fraction is a division operation!

Multiplication and Division

It's never too late to brush up on basic skills. I showed parts of this video in my 5th grade class and had students work out the problems too. Although this video is geared toward GED students, it shows mental math techniques very well. The mechanics of multiplication and division are important to remember and this video shows those steps. What I liked about it is that it promotes understanding that multiplication is repeated addition and that division is repeated subtraction. I also liked the characters and I think students did too. I will probably be using some more videos from this series when we dive into fractions soon.

Math 2012

As I prepare to teach 5th and 7th grade math in this new year, I'm finding lots of helpful video links and websites. Below are some that I might use. I want to have material available for students who may need to brush up on basic math. My 5th grade class is getting started with division and then moving on to fractions. My 7th grade classes are finishing a ratios unit and we'll start talking about negative and positive integers then move on to Surface Area and volume measurements.
